Nob Hill - once a fashionable residential district, this area still contains some elegant buildings, including Grace Cathedral
Our exploration of San Francisco on foot continues through a small part of the city's extensive Chinatown and we find several good value items to buy - all accompanied by lots of sales talk. We then go via Washington Square and the North Beach area to Pier 39 where we have lunch at the same restaurant as yesterday - today we have pizzas
The ferry to Alcatraz departs from the adjacent Pier 41 at 2:45pm - there is a long queue for the boat and, after the short crossing, we find the island equally crowded
Jeanette collects the photographs taken as we boarded the ferry
After a presentation by a National Park Service Ranger, we take a self-guided tour of this infamous prison with the aid of an audio device.

The day ends with another visit to Lombard Street
before returning to the Marina Hotel for our last night's stay in San Francisco
Day 5 begins with us collecting our Chrysler LHS from Dollar Car Rental, and then driving to the Golden Gate Bridge - which is shrouded in the famous San Francisco fog. It is also cold and windy! But the weather is better as we drive south on Highway 1 towards San Gregorio and Santa Cruz, stopping on the way to admire the Pacific Ocean.
